Covered wooden bridges are deeply rooted in New England heritage. The Bath Bridge, in Bath, New Hampshire, is a single lane wooden bridge with a load limit of six tons. It has a four span combination of Burr trusses, multiple kingpost trusses and supplementary arches and is one of the oldest covered bridges in the United States. The incredible history of covered bridges has been recorded as far back as eight hundred years by Marco Polo, in China. The Chapel Bridge, in Lucerne, Switzerland was dated all the way back to 1333, before it was lost to arson in 1993. There was a time when the United States had as many as 12,000 covered bridges. In 1950 the National Society for the Preservation of Covered Bridges was formed to protect the less than 1,500 that remained. Vermont is home to the largest number of covered bridges in New England.
Yankee Barn Homes, the parent company of BarnMakers has been moonlighting building bridges, for residential or commercial use for almost forty years. Fire retardant and safe from fungi, our covered bridge designs are of a hybrid nature, with steel girders supporting a post and beam super structure, constructed using fine southern yellow pine. The added strength of this hybrid system ensures our bridges are suited to withstand substantially more weight than a conventional covered bridge. We also offer these bridges with an open air design, available if you choose, with a covered walkway for foot traffic. |
